To Trade or Not to Trade

Not everyone is completely certain that they want to ship a book that they have registered. Although this seems bizarre, it happened to me today. I knew I didn't really need to keep my copy of the Kite Runner, but I also wasn't quite sure I wanted to part with it. However, it was promptly requested and I am going to ship it out in a day.

For all those indecisive users out there, we have now added the ability to register books but temporarily mark them as "not for trade". Also you may just want to catalog all your books that you are not willing to part with and then casually decide when you want to offer them up for trade.
All of this can be done in the "my bookshelf" area.

Books for MacOS X

CJKarr just recently created a powerful little WhatsOnMyBookshelf exporter for the Books cataloguing application.

You can add any of your books to WhatsOnMyBookshelf for trade extremely quickly and if you run OS X then I encourage you to check it out.

Media Mail

Please use media mail when shipping books within the United States. It is by far the cheapest option.

I have received two books that were shipped using federal express and cost twice as much than the media mail cost.

For a listing of the price per pound to ship a book via media mail, check out the USPS.

[FYI some great features are coming within the next month.]

Updates

  • If you are going on vacation or won't be around to ship out your books, there is now a "vacation" setting that you can check in the "my account" area. This will prevent your books from being requested until you uncheck the box.
  • Tagging is now mandatory, since there were many books that were being submitted without any tag designation.
  • For more information about the books that are available on WhatsOnMyBookshelf, there is a link in the book's profile to its corresponding page on LibraryThing.com.

Feedback

There is now a simple feedback system in place for all orders!

Once a user acknowledges that they receive an order by clicking on "order received" they are given the opportunity to provide the shipper with feedback. You can rate the shipper with values raging from 0 (a horrible trading experience) to 5 (the best thing since sliced bread).

If an order is rejected you also have the opportunity to leave feedback.

This creates a level of accountability and will help ensure that the community is composed of quality users.
