About Us

What is this site about?
WhatsOnMyBookshelf, a book trading community, allows members to exchange their books using a simple point system. Users maintain their own profile page with friends, book inventory, and wishlists.

Our goal is to facilitate the trading of books in addition to connecting people with similar reading interests. Sharing a book is the creation of a common place for dialogue, friendships, and ideas.

How it works:

  • For every 5 books that you register on the site you will receive 1 credit as a promotion.
  • First, a member registers a book which is designated a point value based upon its new book price.
  • Then, a user requests a book by redeeming some of their credits to order the book.
  • Finally, the sender ships the book, and once delivered, will receive the requester’s credits.
  • Under circumstances when a user cannot ship their book, the requester will be notified of the rejection.
  • In additon to registering books, each user maintains a wishlist. When a book listed on the wishlist is registered on the site you will be notified by email.

When adding books, users can choose to either write their own description or use a commercial description for the book. The better a description the more likely an individual is to request your book.

Members also control the categorization of books. Unlike a library or bookstore, the organization of books depends upon personalized tagging rather than traditional categories or numbering schemes.

Where do we get our book data?
All book data is pulled from either Amazon.com or the Library of Congress. By default, we use Amazon since they have an amazing collection of images to accompany their product descriptions. Unfortunately all books are not listed on Amazon and we use Library of Congress as a backup. Books registered using Library of Congress do not receive images.
